GG's Shoo Fly Pie Recipe

  • 2 pie crusts (not baked)
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.25 cup dark brown sugar
  • 3/8 cup salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon shortening (butter)
  • 1/2 teaspoon plus baking soda
  • 1/2-3/4 cup hot water
  • 1/2-3/4 cupt sorgham molasses

Mix flour, sugar, salt, and shortening until crumbs (use fork or pastry cutter)

Reserve 1/2 cup crumbs as topping

Divide remaining crumbs mixture into 2 unbaked pie crusts

Mix hot water, molasses, baking soda in large bowl (it expands)

Pour into pie pans, over first set of crumbs

Add rest of crumbs on top - do no stir

Bake 450 for 10 minutes. Lower temp to 350 and continue baking for 20-30 minutes. Pies should appear "set" when done.
